What a busy time of year this is getting to be if you are a gardener! Whether you are a devoted, experienced gardener, a part time tinkerer, or someone who has hired a gardening service, you may occasionally come upon a situation about your home garden that leaves you with questions. Did you know there is a free hotline for home gardeners that is operated by the Monterey Bay Master Gardeners? It's staffed Monday, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. until noon. There is also an answering machine where you can leave information in order to receive a call back. The phone number is 831.763.8007.
But don't stop there! Located on Freedom Blvd in Watsonville, the office is also open during those hotline hours listed above. During office hours you can stop by and talk in person to a Master Gardener. Whether you call or stop by in person, they may not have an immediate answer to your questions but are happy to do research into your problem and they will get back to you. Really complex or difficult problems can be escalated to get support from through out the state.
You can learn more about the Monterey Bay Master Gardener program through their website at http://www.montereybaymastergardeners.org/ That website also has leaks to the University of California agriculture and Natural Resources site where you can find free information on a number of pests from anthracnose to yellow start thistle, including gophers, moths, and deer. This information comes in the form of "Free Pest Notes for Home and Landscape" and are downloadable files. More serious publications, such as Pests of Landscape Trees and Shrubs", are also available for a fee.
