I am trying to get an email out with the following information. However not everyone has listed their email in our directory, so please share the details about the meeting show below.
As you may be aware, there was a serious fire in the 66 acre open space known as Willow Canyon (bordered by Zanzibar Drive, El Sereno Ct., Vista Del Mar, and Cuesta Dr) in Aptos. The fire started sometime prior to 4AM this past Friday, July 27, and was brought under control by approximately 6:30AM, burning approximately 2 acres of the
66 total acres in Willow Canyon. Cause of the fire is under
investigation, and is suspicious. It is believed that a least one
resident of Zanzibar Drive in the Uplands was among those who first called this in to the Fire Department. Cal Fire also responded to this situation. We all applaud and sincerely thank those responders for their effective efforts in bringing this potentially deadly and devastating situation under control.
A number of us who live adjacent to the canyon have long had concerns about the level of fire abatement measures that have been carried out.
Now that the property has been turned over to the State of California, and is management by a combination of agencies, we are hoping that we can encourage those agencies to carry out these measures on this property which borders our homes, and those in the Uplands as well.
There is a neighborhood meeting to discuss these common interests on Saturday, August 4 at 11AM at the home of John & Cindy Della Penna, at
813 Vista Del Mar (the large orange-colored home on the curve
overlooking the canyon). We urge any interested Uplands homeowners
to attend this meeting. Jeff Terpstra, Aptos Fire Chief will attend, and possibly have several of his staff there to address the fire, the difficulty in reaching and fighting it, and the ongoing investigation.
The Santa Cruz County Sheriff's office is also invited (although their representative may not be able to attend), and we believe a representative from Ellen Pirie's office will also be there.
The purpose of the meeting is to discuss what can be learned from this incident to prevent further fires in the canyon, what to do if residents witness any suspicious activity in the open space, and how we can collectively bring this matter to the attention of the various agencies now involved with this property. This now includes the California Land Conservancy, the Dept of Fish & Game, the Dept of Wildlife, Cal Fire, and possibly others that may have either responsibilities to it, and/or funding to assist with these efforts.
We urge you to make your Uplands homeowners aware of this as quickly as possible, and we hope many of them will join us. Please ask them to RSVP to Jeanine Sande atjeanine@lightenyourway.com so we can have a headcount. If anyone has questions, I would be happy to speak with them. They can reach me at the number below. Thanks for your assistance with this. FYI, I have attached a couple of photos from the incident.
